AFT Paid Student Internships-Please Forward to Students

Dear Colleagues,

I addition to the myriad of announcements you have for your students this week, could you please try to fit in this one extra announcement of paid internships we offering for students?  If you could also forward this message to your student email list that would be great!

Have a great semester!

Jim

Subject: AFT Internship

Hi Folks,
Was hoping you might have students to recommend for our internship program this fall.  We will be conducting interviews on Aug 29th!  If you know of any past students that may be a good fit PLEASE let me know asap.  Please send me email addresses and I will take it from there (hoping to email potential candidates by Tuesday at the latest).

We have restructured the internship into three tracks:

POLITICAL ACTION INTERNSHIP- Sept 3rd-Nov 6th- $1000 stipend- 7hrs/wk
-Campaign work for Prop 30 and 32 as well as Bob Filner for Mayor: phonebanking, precinct walks and other campaign work

VOTER REGISTRATION INTERNSHIP- Sept 3rd-Nov 6th- $1000 stipend- 7hrs/wk
-Get out the vote drive-online and on campuses (our 5 campuses as well as the local CSU's and 2 other community colleges) encouraging absentee voting designation and voter turnout
-Requires access to reliable transportation
-Work will include class presentations, tabling, etc on the various campuses

LABOR INTERNSHIP- All semester- $1000 stipend- 5hrs/week
-Operate the Workers' Rights Center for a shift on campus (hrs M-Th 11-2)
-Class presentations and outreach to publicize the WRC
-Hands-on labor organizing work
-Requires enrollment in Labor Law at City College Monday nights from 6:55-10pm (paid for by AFT) or completion of Labor Law
-Training will be provided by the ERC of San Diego and other labor attorneys

We require that interns be interested in the labor movement, engaged in progressive politics and dedicated to broader social justice issues.

Interns are encouraged to attend all AFT Meetings held on the first Thursday of each month at 3pm at the Handlery Hotel in Mission Valley (950 Hotel Circle North--Presidio Room).  Additionally, interns must be available for meetings twice a month on Wednesdays at 3pm.  There will be opportunities to work with outside organizations such as ICWJ, SD Labor Council, UNITE Here, CPI and more.  We work closely with students groups on each campus and expect interns to support their events throughout the semester.

We will be holding interviews at the AFT Office located at 3737 Camino del Rio South Ste 410 on Wednesday, August 29th at 2:30pm.  Our first intern meeting will be held at the same location on Wednesday, September 5th at 3pm.  Please respond to this email by no later than August 27th if you would like to interview and in the subject line of your email please state which internship track you are considering.  Also, attach a copy of your most recent resume and a statement about why you would like to work with AFT.

Thanks so much,
Larissa
