Hello AFT Colleagues,
AFT is launching our Millionaires Tax (MT) ballot proposition petition drive over the next couple of weeks. If you have missed our earlier emails, the MT would tax only folks who make over $1 million a year and bring in between $6-9.5 billion dollars a year for education and vital public services. Unlike the Governor’s plan, it does not end in four years and does not include any unpopular regressive sales taxes that disproportionately hit the poor and make his measure likely to lose.
The Millionaires Tax would bring money directly into our schools and colleges and begin to restore the cuts we’ve endured over the last few years. If you want more information, you can read the attached article or go to cft.org and click on the Millionaires Tax link.
Over the next two weeks we will launch or ballot initiative petition drive with several events. It would be wonderful to see some of you helping with this effort. Please let me know if you can come to or help with any of these upcoming events.
Monday, Feb 6th Banner and sign holding at 11th and 163 near City College.
From 8-9 AM
From 4-6 PM
Wednesday, Feb 8th, Free Speech Fight event on street at 5th and E at 6:00 PM. Banner, flyers, and perhaps petitions if they are out yet. And speaking if you so choose :).
Friday, Feb 10th between 3-6 at Convention Center (Dem Convention) Banner, flyers, petitions, tabling, etc.
Dem Convention Continues, Saturday, Feb 11th between 8 and 2
Wednesday, Feb 15th 10 AM Press conference in front of B Building at City. We just need supporters to come for a hour an hour or so—come at 9:45.
Wednesday, Feb 15th between 4-6, petition gathering training during time of interns meeting at City College, TBA.
After these kick-off events, the campaign will begin in earnest. We will need folks to table on campus. Take petitions for their friends and neighbors to fill out and bring them back to AFT, help with student volunteers, make contacts with sympathetic community groups and organizations, let us know about events where people would be interested and more.
So, if you would like to help out in this campaign, the final step in the March for California’s Future, please let me know by replying to this email.
In Solidarity, Jim Miller, AFT Political Action VP/Community Outreach
